Dr. Denise Key
Dr. Denise Key is the proud wife of Founding Owner of the Engrafted Word Incorporated, Wilburt (Bubba) L. Key Sr., and the mother of Wilburt Jr., Tyree, and Denesha Key. She is also the proud grandmother of (5) grand-boys and (2) granddaughters. Dr. Key has devoted over 45 years of service to community involvement. Over half of her life has been to advocate for youth and adult family services. In 1991, she and her husband founded an outreach ministry to feed and clothe the benevolent population in Portsmouth Virginia. Since their establishment, over 10,000 men, women, and children have been fed and clothed by this dynamic duo and their staff, the Engrafted Word Incorporated.
In 1998 – 2008, Dr. Key served as radio and television host for the EWMI radio and television broadcast while working to established (3) Academic Training Centers for youth; (1) in Virginia Beach, and (2) in Portsmouth, Virginia. These Centers awarded her national recognition from the Housing Urban Development (HUD) in Richmond-Virginia, for outstanding academic programming and community services among at-risk families and the most often challenged individuals in a city. Most of the programs sponsored by the EWMI, under the direction of Dr. Key, allowed students and families to choose a clinical or direct practice track, which focused on direct impact with clients, or a macro practice track. This track also included political advocacy, community organizing, policy analysis, and/or human services management. While the clinical track seemed to be more popular, the resurgence in community practice and/or concentration was more in demand.
The social work scope of Dr. Key later broadened to include the specialty practice areas of geriatrics and work with veterans and the intellectually and physically disabled. Dr. Key continued to broadened her field by contracting her Organization out to agencies and organizations that specialized in the more definite areas of concentration. She also spearheaded the process of integrating the facets of various social work practices to include the most recent areas of human service demands.
Dr. Key sits on many Boards and Commissions in the City and State of Virginia and is often called upon and respected for her community opinion by her Congressman, Robert C. (Bobby) Scott, her State Senator, L. Louise Lucas, the 80th District House of Delegate Representative, Mathew James, and many others for community updates, community action, and community leadership. Dr. Key is truly a community asset to the city of Portsmouth and throughout the Mid Atlantic Coast.
